Dr. Matthew Bell is a board-certified Physician Assistant with 30 years of clinical experience spanning family medicine, internal medicine, and hospital medicine. He currently serves as the Chief Physician Assistant and the Chief AI Officer for a large federal health care system, where he leads system-wide artificial intelligence strategy, governance, and implementation. In this role, he authored the facility’s AI governance policy framework, established the organization’s AI subcommittee, and leads the education and deployment of AI-enabled clinical tools across the health care system. He also serves on a national-level federal AI assessment subcommittee, representing Physician Assistants in evaluating artificial intelligence platforms and applications across the federal healthcare enterprise.
As a Medical Process Improvement Specialist, Dr. Bell has led systems-level quality improvement initiatives encompassing infrastructure design, statistical and financial modeling, and provider accountability protocols. His more recent work leading a hospital-wide readmission reduction initiative helped elevate his facility from the bottom 40% nationally to among the top three-performing facilities nationwide, with a projected seven-figure return on investment.
Dr. Bell earned his Doctor of Medical Science degree from Lynchburg University in 2021. He holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Hospital Medicine and multiple Healthcare AI certifications. He has served as a clinical preceptor for Physician Assistant students for 29 consecutive years and is a National Health Service Corps Scholar. He is a member of the Coalition for Health AI, the Veterans Association of Physician Assistants, the Academy of Doctoral PAs, and the North Carolina Academy of Physician Assistants.
